T. V. Padma's children's books have generated great interest in India as well as abroad, in terms of their educational content. Padma's magazine columns and animal stories have been used to introduce children to scientific concepts.

Expatriate Indians find that Padma's books are an entertaining way to introduce their children to their cultural heritage. Teachers in India, Britain, and the U.S.A., have found her books a useful resource. Outside India, the books have been promoted by librarians and teachers interested in multiculturalism. In India, The Forbidden Temple has been adopted as a supplemental history text book in some schools, and as recommended reading in English literature at other schools. The book is being translated into regional Indian languages.

T. V. Padma has just completed a collection of mathematical folktales. This delightful collection of stories can be used to introduce children to mathematical concepts in an unusual and interesting way. The collection was published by Tulika (publishers of The Forbidden Temple) in Spring 2007, and may be purchased through their site and this site.

T. V. Padma has enjoyed teaching children at various levels (from middle school to high school). She has worked as the director and headmistress of Inwoods, a small school in England. Her experience as a teacher inspired her to write a Teacher's Guides to The Forbidden Temple and Mathematwist. The teacher's guide to The Forbidden Temple contains background information and ideas for classroom activities and lesson plans. To download this free, 36-page guide, click here(pdf 143 KB). The Teacher's Guide to Mathematwist is shorter, but also contains ideas for additional classroom activities. To download this, click here(pdf 24 KB). The guides are copyrighted, but teachers are permitted to download an adobe acrobat (pdf) copy for their personal use, at no cost.

...careful side notes and detailed bibliography ... The charm of the stories is not restricted to their unusual settings. Each story goes beyond location to capture a situation that is timeless and universal... Older children will be intrigued... and this book will go far towards increasing their appreciation for history and good writing...
